Design of Stone Column to Mitigate Soil Liquefaction: Cases Study of Yogyakarta International Airport

A low-to-medium cohesionless soil with low fines content was predominantly observed at the surfaces of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA). The condition exposed subsoil YIA to Liquefaction in addition its location on a high seismic zone which has increased likelihood massive ground shaking. This means it is necessary improve and vibro-replacement using stone column selected as appropriate method due recent popularity for enhancement sandy ground. Stone ability reduce Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR) liquefiable can be reliably evaluated. Therefore, this study conducted evaluate risk by adopting SPT-based triggering procedure presuming manifestation Severity Index (LSI). It pertinent state that theoretical approach introduced Priebe used design geometry center-to-center distance column. results were presented form maps 50 m × grid size include cut fill, LSI before after improvement, spacing, well depth. discovered triangular spacing required ranged from 1.25 2.5 while maximum depth found 6 m. Moreover, inclusion efficiently reduced severity medium very areas studied. However, several limitations combination improvement methods needs applied moderate LSI.
